Greater Birmingham Humane Society

Auburn University partnered with the GBHS to allow students to gain experience in shelter medicine and surgery. During my two weeks in this program, I performed 59 spays and neuters, repaired 2 umbilical hernias and performed countless physical exams. Beyond just improving my technical skills, I took action against the growing pet-population epidemic, prepared animals for adoption to loving homes, and aided the people who do so much with so little. I gained invaluable knowledge of what goes into animal control centers, spay-neuter clinics and non-profit shelters/rescues. It was an educational experience and the relationships formed during my time there, will have a lasting effect on me personally and as a professional.
